The layout of downtown Cancun is peculiar and very different from other cities in Mexico that were designed centuries ago. Among its characteristics is the location of the City Hall in front of one of the busiest avenues in Cancun. Although it has a small plaza in front, it is not the meeting place for the people of Cancun, as most of the central plazas in Mexico are for their towns.
That meeting place is the emblematic Parque de las Palapas in the center of SM 22, about 200 m west of the City Hall. Throughout its history, the Parque de las Palapas has been remodeled on several occasions to the point that the palapas that gave it its name were removed 25 years ago.
Now, after 8 months of remodeling, the Parque de las Palapas welcomes Cancun residents and visitors again with new or renovated facilities such as restaurants and a new covered dining area, three children’s play areas, a multi-use stage, green areas and lots of social tradition. Come and visit it!
