This park is internationally recognized as an authentic natural treasure. It has a coral formation inside the island that is unique in the world and is believed to hold remnants of the ancient Mayan civilization; it is considered a beautiful natural aquarium. It has a wide variety of up to 60 different species of fish, crustaceans, and corals.
It was declared a National Park in 1980 and has been set aside as a special zone for the protection and preservation of the flora and fauna of the region. Its name “Chankanaab” comes from the Mayan language and means: “Chan” small and “Kanaab” ocean or sea. This place not only offers indescribable beauty and tranquility but also adventure and fun. Some of the activities you can do are swimming with dolphins, snuba, seatrek, snorkeling, diving or even jumping from a 25-meter zip line that crosses the lagoon.
The area has botanical gardens that house more than 350 species of plants, it is a perfect place to learn about the culture and biodiversity of the region. It is also a perfect place to relax as you can rent hammocks or even pamper yourself with a massage offered inside the park for an additional fee.
The park is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The entrance fee varies depending on whether you are an adult or a child and can vary depending on the season. The basic entrance fee includes parking, restrooms, showers and locker rooms, the Mayan house, hammocks and deck chairs, among other amenities.
