International Beach Cleanup Day

The International Beach Cleanup Day was created by The Ocean Conservancy in 1991, from two major international programs within the Global Cleanup campaign that originated from an American initiative known as “Clean Up the World.” Although this celebration has expanded to more than 123 countries, each one celebrates it on a different date, but all in September.

Why is it Necessary to Clean the Beaches?

Pollution on beaches can originate in two ways: one is due to natural phenomena such as heavy rains, hurricanes and red tides, and the other is caused directly by human activities. In the latter case, the presence of organic and inorganic waste from domestic and industrial waste is increasingly evident and alarming, and this is only the symptom of the worrying state of our oceans.

One of the most worrying problems in recent years is the impact of plastics due to their prolonged presence in the environment. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans, and this situation is largely due to the trash that is thrown on the beaches.

What Actions are Taken on this Day?

On this day, thousands of people gather to collect solid waste from beaches, rivers and wetlands, identify the sources of this waste and promote changes in behaviors that generate pollution.

How does Sunset World Participate?

Sunset Royal and Ocean Spa in Cancun have invited employees and guests to join in cleaning their respective beaches early in the morning on Tuesday, September 17.

In the case of Sunset Royal the appointment is at 7:50 am in the hotel theater, in the case of Ocean Spa it is at 8:00 pm on the beach. There will be a brief explanation of the correct handling of garbage and the necessary equipment will be provided. After the cleaning there will be a get-together in which a snack will be offered.
