The President of Mexico has inaugurated the first line of the Interoceanic Train, aimed at connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The Z Line of the Isthmus Train started operating on December 22, 2023, while the FA Line will only operate in the Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz – Roberto Ayala, Tabasco section from this date. In March 2024, passenger service will begin in the Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz – Palenque, Chiapas section of the FA Line. Finally, in July 2024, the K-Line will start providing service to the public.
This project is part of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) and aims to commercially connect Asia with the eastern coast of the United States and Europe through the narrowest 303 kilometers of Mexico. Additionally, 10 development hubs will be installed in different industry nodes.
The Head of State emphasized the strategic importance of this project and mentioned that he has presented it to world leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. At the Marina Shipyard #20 in Salina Cruz, the President highlighted that this project would fulfill the dream that authorities and governors have had for centuries.
The Chief Executive referred to the vision of German scientist Alexander von Humboldt, who proposed three options to connect the two oceans, including the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, considered the best passage. However, the construction of the Panama Canal was prioritized, which currently faces difficulties.
