According to the Mexican Ministry of Tourism, a Magical Town is a place that “through time and in the face of modernity, has preserved its value and cultural heritage”. It is a community that preserves its magic with the passage of time, a place where stories emanate, transcendent events within the daily life of society, and today represent an opportunity for tourism. In addition, the designation of these magical towns allows them access to a budget for public works and security. The facades of the houses are painted, heritage monuments are maintained, and the electrical and drainage networks are improved, among others. In June 2023, the Federal Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, granted the island of Cozumel the honor of being recognized as a Magical Town. It joins the 177 cities in Mexico that have received this recognition. This is great news for the residents as it becomes one of four municipalities in the state of Quintana Roo to have this title, along with Isla Mujeres, Tulum and Bacalar.
Cozumel was a center of trade for the Mayans. It was considered a sacred place and a pilgrimage destination, especially for women seeking the blessing of the goddess Ix Chel, who represented the moon, love, and fertility. This island has witnessed important historical events such as the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century to the Battle of Cozumel during the Caste War in the 19th century. Nowadays, the Cozumel Carnival is celebrated every year before Lent, it is recognized as one of the 8th most representative carnivals in the country. In this carnival, the Mayan, Spanish, and Caribbean influences of the island are represented. There are parades, kings, queens, costume contests, samples of its rich gastronomy, local crafts, music, and dance.
Cozumel is one of the most popular destinations for travelers who want to live an immersive underwater experience. Thanks to its turquoise and crystal-clear waters, white sand, reefs, and endless underwater flora and fauna, this destination is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sun.
